WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the occasion of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is pleased to announce the expansion of its online Spanish language service. With the launch of our Spanish language landing webpage (childrensdefense.org/spanish), CDF is now providing information in Spanish on our website about our Healthy Child and Elect Susie Campaigns, as well as press releases, Child Watch® columns, and materials on our Cradle to Prison Pipeline® Summit and Report

“Our society is enriched by the treasure of all of its children,” said CDF President Marian Wright Edelman. “Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for us to redouble our collective efforts to fight for quality education, health coverage and safe streets for young people everywhere in America. Our Spanish language landing page enables us to extend CDF resources to a broader universe of partners who share our belief that no child should be left behind because all children are sacred.”

Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1988 as a celebration of the culture and traditions of U.S. residents of Latino descent. The starting date, Sept. 15, marks the anniversary of independence from the imperial oppression of 19th century Spain for five Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

“Latinos in America who work hard to provide for their families must continue to struggle against oppression from discrimination and economic exploitation. We must all share their struggle against that oppression for the sake of the children,” said Edelman. “¡Sí, Se Puede!”
