State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells

Ohio House of Representatives House District 1

Dontavius Jarrells grew up in Cleveland’s historic Hough neighborhood, where his mother’s example instilled in him the dignity of hard work and a deep sense of responsibility to others. Watching his mother work multiple jobs to support their family, Dontavius learned the meaning of sacrifice, perseverance, and the value of opportunity to change lives.

His childhood shaped him in other ways, too. Dontavius survived lead poisoning as a young boy and spent years in speech therapy. The experience stayed with him, shaping how he understood the connection between the places people live, the opportunities they receive, and the lives they are able to build. Years later, that understanding would become part of his purpose.

Today, State Representative Dontavius L. Jarrells is serving his third term in the Ohio House of Representatives, representing House District 1, which includes the City of Bexley and neighborhoods throughout Columbus. He has emerged as one of the most effective Democratic legislators in the Ohio House, earning a reputation for bringing people together around ideas that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of Ohioans. Since his election, Dontavius has introduced more than 50 pieces of legislation and helped enact 11 bills into law, building bipartisan support to protect workers, strengthen families, expand opportunity, and make government work better for the people it serves.

His record reflects the values that have guided his life.

He helped pass the Pay Stub Protection Act, guaranteeing workers access to information about the wages they have earned. He fought to remove discriminatory restrictions from property records so that the remnants of discrimination would no longer remain written into the places families call home. He championed the Mental Health and Disability Terminology Act to ensure that Ohio law speaks about people with the dignity and humanity they deserve.

His work to protect Ohioans from lead exposure is especially personal. Dontavius helped change Ohio law to address the cost of replacing lead-contaminated water service lines, and it was through his bill that $150 million in ARPA funding was designated for lead prevention and mitigation. The child who once suffered the consequences of lead poisoning is now helping ensure that other children do not have to share that experience. His service can also be measured by what he has brought home. During his tenure, Dontavius has helped secure more than $158.3 million for House District 1 and Franklin County, investing in healthcare, education, neighborhoods, infrastructure, economic development, and the institutions that help communities thrive. Some of the work he values most, however, will never appear in a piece of legislation or a state budget. His office has helped thousands of residents navigate government, find critical resources, and solve problems that may never make headlines but can mean everything to the person who needs help.

For Dontavius, that is the heart of public service. It begins with people. For Dontavius, that is the heart of public service. It begins with people.

His faith remains central to who he is. He is a member of Union Grove Baptist Church and a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Through every chapter of his life, Dontavius has carried with him a belief in what is possible. He believes a child can become more than their circumstances predict. He believes government can earn the trust of the people it serves. He believes people with different politics can still find common ground and make life better for those they represent. And he believes every community deserves the opportunity to be defined not by its challenges, but by the promise of its people.
