Joy is a birthright. Few places remind us of that truth more powerfully than Martha’s Vineyard, where community, culture, and purpose converge each summer in something truly special.
This August, Children’s Defense Fund is proud to present Joy on the Vineyard — a week-long celebration on Martha’s Vineyard uniting worship, laughter, and civic engagement in support of child well-being. August is both Black Comedy Month and Black Philanthropy Month, making this the perfect moment to gather, give, and act together on behalf of America’s children and young people.
EVENTS OVERVIEW
Sunday, August 2 | Worship at Union Chapel
CDF is honored to worship alongside longtime partner and guest preacher the Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, III at the historic Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. We gather to celebrate, reflect, and recommit to the children who call us forward.
Monday, August 3 | Martha’s Vineyard Comedy Fest – Opening Night Benefit
Join us for an unforgettable night of laughter at the 15th annual Martha’s Vineyard Comedy Fest, hosted by Damon Williams, featuring performances by Brian “Da Wildcat” Smith, Dominique Witten, and Guy Torry.
All proceeds benefit Children’s Defense Fund and the young people we serve.
August 5 | Oak Bluffs “Inkwell” Polar Bears Morning Workout
Each morning on Martha’s Vineyard, the legendary Oak Bluffs Polar Bears gather at Inkwell Beach for fitness, fellowship, and a little cold-water courage.
On the morning of Wednesday, August 5, members of the CDF team will be joining in. If you are on the Vineyard, come find us.
Workout begins at 7:30 AM. No RSVP required.
Saturday, August 8 | Children’s Forum
Join Brittany Packnett Cunningham, CDF Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, and Dr. John Jackson, President and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education, for a candid conversation on the issues most impacting children and families in America today.
Monday, August 3 | XU on the Vineyard Presents – A House Divided: Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion
A House Divided highlights the historic civil rights achievements in New Orleans through the lived experiences of those who helped shape this important legacy. The panel discussion will build on the film’s themes by reflecting on the current state of civil rights and Xavier’s enduring mission to create a more just and humane society. Among the panelists is our President and CEO Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson.
Children’s Defense Fund has spent more than 50 years ensuring every child grows up with dignity, hope, and joy. Joy on the Vineyard is a celebration of that mission — and an invitation to be part of it.
