Did Your Texas Representatives Stand Up for Children Last Year?

February 12, 2020 | Texas

The Children’s Defense Fund Action Council recently released a Legislative Report Card for the 2019 legislative session in Congress.

The report card incorporated over 500 bills to assess every representative in the House and every senator in the Senate (29 of the bills were endorsed by CDF). Each bill is categorized by whether it benefits the interests of children or whether it is against the interests of children. Keep reading to find out which Texas legislators scored the best and which scored the worst!

A-rated politicians include District 16 Rep. Veronica Escobar, District 29 Rep. Sylvia Garcia, District 9 Rep. Al Green, District 18 Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, District 30 Rep. Eddie Johnson, and District 33 Rep. Marc Veasey. In total, these representatives sponsored ten bills for children, with Reps. Al Green and Sheila Jackson Lee sponsoring four each. These bills include the Keeping Families Together Act of 2019, the Housing Fairness Act of 2019, and the Original Living Wage Act, to name a few. For more information on all the bills included in the report card, visit cdfactioncouncil.org/reportcard-bills. These representatives not only sponsored and cosponsored bills for children, but also did not take any actions that CDF considered to be against the interests of children. CDF-Texas thanks these representatives for standing up for all our children!

F-rated politicians on the report card include District 27 Rep. Michael Cloud, District 1 Rep. Louis Gohmert, District 27 Rep. Chip Roy, District 14 Rep. Randy Weber, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Overall, these politicians sponsored or cosponsored twenty-two bills judged to be against the interests of children, and voted against the Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Demonstration Act of 2019, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019, and the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, which were all bills endorsed by CDF. Learn more about which other bills were endorsed and considered to be against the interests of children here. Hopefully, in the future, these legislators will do more to stand up for Texas children.
