The Honorable Bob Taft

Governor of Ohio (1999-2007)

Gov Bob Taft served as Ohio’s 67th Governor. During his term, Governor Taft initiated his education reform plan called The Building Blocks for Student Success. The plan was five point program to improve learning standards, early childhood education, school health care, school facilities, and school funding for low wealth schools. He initiated the OhioReads program to improve students’ reading skills. Forty-five thousand volunteer tutors helped children improve their reading abilities in the program. He created the Ohio School Facilities Commission and invested $10 billion to rebuild outdated and dilapidated schools across the state. He improved Ohio’s 4th and 8th-grade math scores and graduation rates during his administration. He championed the disaggregation of student data to better identify inequities in Ohio’s educational system and created the value added index to recognize the improvements being made by low wealth school districts. He reformed the school funding plan by establishing the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Financing Student Success and implementing recommendations to improve funding for low wealth districts.
