Children’s Defense Fund Statement in Response to the Nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is proud of our legacy of working to improve the health and well-being of children and youth for more than 50 years. With child advocates across the nation, we are building community so young people grow up with dignity, hope, and joy.

CDF is not, nor has it ever been, associated with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., or Children’s Health Defense, the organization he created.  Furthermore, we are deeply concerned about Kennedy’s consideration to lead the United States Department of Health and Human Services in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. The Department houses seasoned experts, distinguished civil servants, and critical divisions responsible for the care and nurture of young people, including the Administration for Children’s and Families.

In the areas of children’s health and healing, CDF has long advocated for increased access to vaccines, life-saving medication and nutrition care. As parents decide what is right for their families, we encourage them to talk to trusted healthcare professionals to make decisions rooted in facts and science.

As the new Administration takes shape, we will continue to advocate and organize for all young people to enjoy regular, nourishing meals and active lives, marked by positive social adjustment, sustainable environments, and health care homes for their bodies and minds. We welcome all who hope for this future to join us.
