Educate for Change: Civics in Texas
Texas youth need comprehensive civic education, and they need it now.
Young people in our state are living through a time of dwindling civic literacy, decreasing trust in civic institutions, and a series of unprecedented, historic events. Many are already stepping up to meet this moment: leading mutual aid efforts, coordinating protests, and organizing to turn out at the ballot box.
Their leadership deserves to be matched by a civic education that reflects their communities, with a comprehensive curriculum supported institutionally by teachers, schools, and administrators alike.
Our report centers the experiences of eight civic educators in Texas to illuminate how we can realize that vision. They identify the key roadblocks to comprehensive civic education, as well as our next best steps for civics in Texas.
Youth are our future, and Texas must invest in that future.
