When Teresa Todd, an elected official, government lawyer and single mother, saw three siblings struggling along a dark West Texas highway, she didn’t hesitate. She pulled over and went into “mom mode.”
She assessed the situation and determined one sibling needed immediate medical attention.
She ushered the siblings out of the road and into her car.
She started making calls for help.
For her efforts, Teresa was arrested—caught up in a larger trend of increasingly punitive measures toward those who provide aid to migrants near the border. “I honestly don’t feel like I ever did anything wrong: I stopped to help some kids,” she told the New York Times.
