CDF Cares: Resource Assistance for Los Angeles Area Wildfires

As the impact of devastating wildfires continue to affect the Los Angeles area, Children’s Defense Fund is holding the Children’s Defense Fund-California team as well as our local CDF Freedom Schools® staff, scholars, parents, and partners close in heart.  

CDF wishes safety and relief for all affected during this difficult time. We have compiled a list of resources for individuals and families navigating the aftermath of this unexpected circumstance:

Evacuation Areas: The following links include active evacuation orders and information for further assistance depending upon where you live.  

FEMA Assistance: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is now accepting applications for assistance from impacted Californians. FEMA will also assist victims, in-person, at numerous Los Angeles County libraries.  

How to Talk to Your Children About the Wildfires: The destruction created by the wildfires in the Los Angeles region can be hard to talk about with your children. The Los Angeles Times has provided age-appropriate tips for navigating this conversation. 

Los Angeles County Resources: Learn how various LA County departments are offering assistance to impacted residents.  

Mental Health Resources: Both Los Angeles County and the State of California have provided a list of mental health resources for locals.  

Metro: Fares remain free on the Los Angeles Metro system. Read more information here.  

Mutual Aid: Los Angeles’ mutual aid community is still assisting the thousands of people in need in the region. Learn more about how they can support your needs.  

School Schedules: While many school districts in the Los Angeles region are slated to reopen by January 14, some will remain closed. Families are encouraged to check with their local school districts for the latest information.  

  • Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District: While most schools in Santa Monica have reopened, schools in Malibu will remain closed through January 15
  • Pasadena Unified Schools (Pasadena, Altadena, Seirra Madra) will remain closed through January 17
  • All Ventura United School District schools are currently open for normal instruction hours.
